I popped a Netflix movie into my DVD player the other day, and I placed the DVD that had previously been in the player in the Netflix sleeve. The next day, in a rush, I accidentally mailed this DVD back to Netflix. After calling and explaining this to them, they said that since they also rent the DVD that I mailed by mistake, they had no way of “catching” it, and their processors would assume it was a mislabeled DVD, which they would re-sleeve and put back into circulation.
They gave me a credit on my account equal to more than what it will cost me to replace the DVD, so this does not bother me. I am curious how their processing works though, if they are not able to catch a DVD, even if they know in advance where it is coming from and what sleeve it will be in.
